I thought it was time to write a newsletter to let you know how things are going in 2015. My goal is 2015 mats in 2015… and we are well underway to reaching that goal. As of today 350 mats have gone to the depot, and I know there are a lot of mats in schools and people’s homes ready to be delivered.
What has happened so far this year? Well, York Region Catholic schools have gotten the weaving fever. Thanks to our video with the kids at All Saints in Markham, dozens of York Region schools have taken on the project. A big thank you to the people out there who have helped get this initiative started in this area.
Dufferin/ Peel Catholic Schools have put up a challenge to collect a million bags by June. Many of their schools have started weaving and the collecting is going on with drop off sites at St. Rita and at Mary Fix.
Moncton and Fredericton ladies are still hard at work and they are producing mats .. hopefully we can find people who are making a trip to Toronto for me to get their mats.
One of my friends who lives in PEI and is a beautiful crocheter and handbag making partner just sent me 9 lovely handbags with the aid of her grandson who is doing some visiting here in Toronto over his March break.
Lastly and sadly, I have not been able to get milk bags to my friends in Haiti. I try not to bother Air Transat but ask them at the beginning of each month if we can send a shipment to Haiti.. the answer is not good. They would take the bags, but there is an embargo at the airport and shipments are not being allowed into the country. I’m not sure about sea containers at that customs department, but by sea it is so expensive to send and then of course there is the fee in Haiti which would be exorbitant. So we will have to wait until the airport opens up again. It is hard when all you want to do is help and you can’t.
Looking forward to spring,
Keep up the good work everyone, and thanks,
